Mike Gonzales Biography

Mike Gonzales was born, raised and educated in McCook, Nebraska. He began his education at North Ward Elementary, eventually graduating from McCook Community College with an Associate of Arts degree in 1990.

Mike began his service on the McCook City Council in 2009 fulfilling the term of Colleen Loveland-Grant after her unexpected death. On December 6, 2010, he was nominated and voted Vice President of the Council by his peers and on December 1, 2014, nominated and voted Mayor.

Prior to serving on the City Council, he served two terms as a member of the McCook Public School Board of Education, from 2001-2008. During his two terms he served as Vice President and Secretary. He also served as Chairman of the Negotiation Committee, the Finance Committee and the Activities Committee as well as the Facility and Wellness Committee. In 2008 he was elected to the Nebraska School Board Association Legislation Committee.

Mike has been employed with the Ed Thomas YMCA in McCook since 1975. From 1975 to 1982 he served as the Program Director. In 1982, he was selected as the Executive Director and is certified as a YMCA Senior Director.

Currently, Mike serves on the following: 

  • McCook Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors;
  • Community Chest Board of Directors
  • Big Give Committee; and
  • Is a proud member of the Patriot Guard.

Other community organizations he has served on are:

  • McCook Rotary Club Board of Directors;
  • McCook United Way Board of Directors;
  • MEDC Housing Committee;
  • KM for Kids Board of Directors;
  • Home Town Competitive Charitable Giving Task Force; and
  • Vision McCook.

Mike also served as Nebraska’s first ASA State Deputy Umpire in Chief. In 1997 he was inducted into the ASA National Indicator Fraternity. He was also a Registered Nebraska High School Softball Official (officiating in three state tournaments).

Mike enjoys spending time with his family, coaching softball, reading, gardening, and outdoor cycling.
