Gene grew up in Grand Island, Nebraska and graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1969. He then attended Kearney State College from 1969 to 1973 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education with a double major in History and Political Science. Gene began his teaching career at Grant Junior High in Grant, Nebraska. He also coached football, basketball and track at the junior and senior high level.

In 1980, Gene married Nancy Prosser. Together, they have two children and seven grandchildren.

He taught and coached in the Grant Public School system until 1998 when he and Nancy moved to McCook to continue their educational careers. In 2000, Gene received a MA degree from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in the field of Curriculum and Instruction.

From 1998 to 2014, Gene taught at McCook Junior High and also coached 9th grade boys' basketball for three years. Later he would become the first intramural and athletic director for the McCook Junior High.

In May of 2014, Gene retired as a teacher after teaching for 39 years.

Gene is a member of the Memorial United Methodist Church and has been very active in the church, leading various Bible study classes, serving on several church committees and being chairperson for the Staff-Pastor-Parish Committee. Gene has served as lay leader for the congregation for the past three years.

While living in McCook, Gene became a member of the Southwest Nebraska Community Theater Association (SWNCTA), serving three terms as president and taking part in numerous SWNCTA productions.

Gene currently serves on the McCook Community Chest Board.

Some of his interests include traveling, gardening, reading, and attending baseball games.
