Bruce McDowell was born and raised in the Rogue Valley of southwest Oregon. He graduated from Eagle Point High School in 1964. He entered the local workforce doing work as a wild lands fire fighter, logger, high climber, millworker and rough carpenter. In 1969 he enrolled and spent two years, at Southern Oregon College in Ashland Oregon. Bruce enjoyed many outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing and camping with his family. He also managed and coached T-ball and Little League baseball teams.
Bruce was hired by Pacific Northwest Bell in Medford Oregon in February 1972, beginning a 33 year career with the ‘Phone Company’. He held numerous technical titles working both outside in the Construction Department and inside as a Central Office Technician. He was also certified as a trainer and facilitator. Bruce was elected to various local union offices in the three cities where he worked, Medford and Eugene Oregon and Denver Colorado.
Bruce in an avid traveler having been to all 50 of the United States of America, three Canadian Provinces and three States in Mexico by the age of 55. It was indirectly the result of a motorcycle ride from Denver Colorado to Springfield Illinois that led Bruce and his wife Cathy to discover McCook. After several visits they decided that McCook is where they wanted to live. They bought a house in November of 2004. Six months later they both retired from what was at the time, Qwest Communications, and moved to McCook.
Bruce has been active in the community since moving to McCook. He has volunteered for McCook Area Chamber of Commerce events, the Buffalo Commons Storytelling Festival, McCook Main Street, serving as Treasurer from 2008 – 2010 and is the current Treasurer of the Norris Institute. Bruce also helps with fundraising events for Prairie Plains CASA.
